About MND
Motor Neurone Disease is a general term used for a group of diseases that affect the nerve cells that control movement. Motor Neurone Disease can be bewildering due to its relative obscurity. Although classified as a rare disease, there are approximately 140,000 cases diagnosed per year- which translates to 384 new cases every day!
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge shone a spotlight on the condition and renewed the research effort worldwide by bringing in donations worth 115 million dollars. Following this, there have been exciting breakthroughs in understanding and treatment of MND.
However, India hasn’t had nearly the same level of awareness yet. While there are some notable names one can think of when talking about MND such as Stephen Hawking or Lou Gehrig, the general public often don’t know a lot about the condition. Many would be surprised to know that Amitabh Bachchan has Myasthenia Gravis – an autoimmune neuromuscular disorder that shares similar symptoms to MND.
Due to a lack of proper data on how many Indians are affected, the government and pharmacies haven’t paid enough attention to research and support for MND.
Keeping this in mind, we have broken down the basics in simple terms so that anyone can understand what MND is. We guide you further step by step in living with it. We recommend that you go through it in order for more clarity.
We also have a Facebook page and a private group, where you can find more information and resources.
