About Dr. Shyama Narang

Dr. Shyama Narang left us on the 2nd September 2019 after a valiant battle with Motor Neurone Disease. Her efforts were superhuman, doing everything she could in her time left here and she never quit. Shyama had a great birthday party this 22nd June 2019. Although her body was tired, Shyama always wanted to share her time with her family and especially friends. She wanted to set up a foundation for MND during her lifetime itself, but fate decided otherwise.

Turning challenges into strength,
she inspires us all

1. Early Life and Education
Dr. Shyama Narang was born in Bangalore and completed her schooling there before moving to Moscow on the Indian government's reciprocal exchange program. She pursued her MBBS and MD in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the People's Friendship University in Moscow.

2. Professional Journey

Upon returning to India, Dr. Narang worked for several years in a government hospital in Hyderabad. She then moved back to Bangalore, where she served at Maiya Multispeciality Hospital in Jayanagar for nearly 30 years, dedicating herself to patient care and medical practice.

3. International Exposure and Advocacy

In 1985, Dr. Narang participated in the Women's International Cross-Cultural Exchange program in Geneva, working for six months at the Frauenambulatorium in Zürich. She actively engaged in international women and health meetings and supported the SHODHINI project, focusing on medicinal plants and women's health from 1987 to 1992.

4. Social and Political Engagement
Beyond her medical career, Dr. Narang was deeply involved in the women's movement, advocating for gender equality and other socio-political issues. She was a free thinker with strong convictions and served as the President of an association for sexual minorities, even before the LGBT movement gained widespread attention.

5. Personal Achievements and Physical Endurance
Despite having childhood polio, Dr. Narang remained physically active. She regularly swam 20 laps non-stop at the Century Club and led a Himalayan expedition to Gangotri as the official medical doctor for a group of 15 girls under 15 years old. She also conducted the first disability audit for Metro Stations Reach 1 for the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited in 2011.

6. Battle with Motor Neuron Disease and Legacy
Diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease, Dr. Narang faced the challenges with remarkable fortitude. She continued to care for her family and remained engaged in her professional and social commitments until her passing on 2nd September 2019 at Apollo Hospital, Jayanagar, Bangalore. Her legacy lives on through the Dr. Shyama Narang Foundation, which she envisioned to support those affected by MND.
