3rd Annual Conference

3rd-annual-conference-banner
3rd-annual-conference-unit

Presenting our one-day conference on Motor Neuron Disease, focusing on disease management, therapy, and patient care, building on past successes.

In present times, although there’s no standard treatment for MNDs, effective management with symptomatic and supportive therapies can greatly enhance quality of life.

Through collaborative sessions, we are engaging directly with patients, caregivers, and various therapists to develop a new understanding of MND/ALS.

Multidisciplinary Management and Care in ALS

  • Challenges and Uncertainty: MND presents unique challenges with unpredictable progression, impacting patients and caregivers.
  • Improving Quality of Life: Despite challenges, significant improvements in quality of life are possible through early intervention and symptom management.
  • Medical Management: Current treatments like Riluzole and Edaravone modestly affect disease progression. Symptom relief is managed with various medications.

Role of Multidisciplinary Team

  • Speech-Language Pathologists: Address communication and swallowing difficulties.
  • Dieticians: Develop personalized diet plans to maintain nutrition.
  • Physiotherapists: Maintain muscle function and mobility.
  • Occupational Therapists: Maximize independence in daily activities.
  • Psychiatric Social Workers: Provide mental health support and community resources.

Assistive Devices and Palliative Care

  • Assistive Devices: Support breathing, nutrition, mobility, and safety.
  • Palliative Care: Focus on patient-centered care, symptom management, and quality of life.
  • Specialized Home Care Support: NIMHANS provides specialized home care through a multidisciplinary team, ensuring support and empowerment for ALS patients and their caregivers.

This comprehensive approach is supported by the Cipla Foundation and Dr. Shyama Narang Foundation (MND Trust), offering essential services free of charge.

About NIMHANS

The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) is an Institute of National Importance (INI) and is recognized for its multidisciplinary approach for patient care and academic pursuit in the field of Mental Health and Neurosciences.
NIMHANS has been at the forefront in the care of patients with neuromuscular disorders and has catered to the care of such patients for nearly 50 years. Prof. Dr. Gourie-Devi was a pioneer in the evaluation and treatment of patients with neuromuscular disorders, especially MND / ALS and has contributed immensely to MND research. Her efforts were carried forward by Prof. Dr. A Nalini who leads the neuromuscular team of NIMHANS. She maintains the hospital MND registry and has more than 3500 cases registered since 1976. The neuromuscular team of NIMHANS caters to the care of at least 20-30 patients of MND every month and multidisciplinary, holistic treatment is provided to each one of them.

Abundant experimental work is done on MND at NIMHANS in collaboration with other departments and renowned international faculty to find a cause for this deadly disease. Advanced research is being done in NIMHANS on genetics, biomarkers and stem cells in ALS.

NIMHANS has also pioneered palliative care of patients with neurodegenerative disorders, especially MND. The unmet needs of these patients and family are identified, home visits are carried out, psychosocial support is provided, and the best possible multidisciplinary care is provided to the patients. NIMHANS is now recognized as an Advanced Center for Neuromuscular Disorders (NACNMD) and hopes to soon be recognized as a “Center of Excellence for Research in ALS / MND” its treatment and research under the relentless efforts of the neuromuscular team, led by Prof. Nalini.

About Dr. Shyama Narang Foundation

The MND Trust formed under Dr. Shyama Narang Foundation, is a Registered Trust formed to raise awareness of Motor Neuron Disease and its impact on the community. Dr. Shyama Narang, a medical doctor, MD (OBG) was diagnosed with MND during 2015 and during her lifetime she strived to maintain her independence and enhanced her quality of life. Despite all odds, during her lifetime she wanted to form a foundation to inculcate the same passion for living. Unfortunately, fate had other plans for her, and she breathed her last on 2nd September 2019.

In the last couple of months, we have been providing practical assistance to people with MND through physical and emotional support through a panel of doctors under
various systems of medicine and through trained counsellors. The Trust seeks community support for the MND warriors, and we know you are there with us.
